BAKER, La. (BRPROUD) – The Baker Police Department has a safe space for exchanges to take place in the city. Baker Police Chief Carl Dunn said the Safe Exchange Zone was created after a property-for-money exchange at an apartment complex became a robbery.

"I said, ‘Well, we got to do something where people can meet in a park or somewhere after dark,'" said Dunn.

Dunn said he was able to work something out with Entergy and upgrade the department's lights and add new LED lights in the parking lot. Several cameras are focused there, and Dunn also got two license plate readers. Dunn said they get every plate that comes through the lot.

"I put in my budget for the year, which was the fiscal year that's still going on this year, for new cameras, and new license plate readers and everything. So everything every transaction can be recorded," he said.

Everything was done in 14 months. Dunn said that many courts arrange for child custody exchanges to take place at police stations because of disputes or domestic situations.

The Safe Exchange zone is for all transactions, not just for child custody exchanges.

"I keep that area clear of all police cars and police vehicles. So there's always somewhere to park right here," Dunn said.

The zone is monitored 24/7 and is on the west side of the building. The Baker Police Department is located at 1320 Alabama St.

"We just tried to do everything we can to keep everybody safe," Dunn said.
