MIFFLINTOWN — Students in areas of the Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology building do not hear announcements during the school year.

That's about to change. The Academy's Operating Committee approved the installation of a new communications system by Sage Technology Solutions of Mount Joy during its monthly meeting Thursday night. The new system will replace and add additional speakers and alerts to the building.

The cost of the project is $116,503, which is being paid for using awarded grants.

New speakers will replace the current system, which is outdated, and reach all areas of the building. Shops will get strobe warning lights that will be activated in the event of an emergency announcement. There will also be push button call switches in all classrooms to be used in an emergency.

Compressors Purchase

The Operating Committee approved to have Carrier replace a compressor in the chiller in the amount of $15,878.38.

They also approved the purchase of a compressor and air dryers with installation from C.H. Reed for $45,640 plus freight.
